About Us
The Journey Begins
In 2022, what started as crates of fruit and veg on a foldable table at a Bristol market stall grew into something more—a practical solution to reconnect food with land, people, and purpose. Fairbite Ltd’s mission is simple and remains just as relevant today: to make fresh, fair, and sustainable food accessible where it often isn’t.
I’m Hielen, founder of Fairbite Ltd, The Fair Grocer© platform, and Proudly Rooted©. Born in Milan, Italy, to Eritrean parents, I’ve always lived between cultures.
I moved to Bristol in 2014 and have called it home ever since.
Community engagement, cultural diversity, sustainable economy, social entrepreneurship, and a passion for technology and data have been my foundations—pillars that shaped how I see the world: curious, critical, and committed to making systems work for more people—not just the few they were designed for.
Our Mission
We exist to make the local economy meaningful and relatable. Not just products on shelves, but a system that is fairer, more transparent, and rooted in real human connections.
The Fair Grocer© is not a traditional wholesaler, but we aim to offer bulk pricing to businesses and individuals and optimise logistics in a way that is fair for both sides of the market.
We bring producers, farmers, and independent businesses together through partnerships that benefit everyone. We focus on three things:
Visibility
Helping local producers and small farms reach customers who value their work.
Fairness
Letting farmers set prices, tell their story, and gain the recognition they deserve.
Belonging
Creating food systems where communities recognise themselves and their land.
Our Approach
From Bristol to Bath, London, and beyond, I visited farms, markets, cafés, restaurants, delis, and wholefood shops, listening to those who grow, sell, and buy food. I asked producers: Would you deliver to Bristol? What could help your sales? And buyers: Would you buy directly from local producers? What products do you need—or stop buying—and why?
Why Bristol? It is one of the UK cities rapidly shaped by new wealth—gentrification, of which I am a part—without strong support for the local economy. As a result, many markets and farms stopped serving the city, creating the surreal sight of Somerset and South African apples on the same shelves.
The patterns were clear: small farms and local producers wanted to reach urban customers but faced logistical and administrative barriers. Communities and businesses wanted fresh, local produce but struggled to access it. The need was for a bridge—not another chain—between producers and people.
To make this work, I bring together experts in market research, technology, business strategy, networking, sales, and cultural insight—forming a collective effort aimed at improving people’s lives. Our goal is to solve problems where the food supply chain fails, not add another layer to a broken system.

We are still small, but our roots are strong—and proudly rooted in Bristol. The next chapter is about scaling what works, learning from what doesn’t, and building a fairer food chain together.
